General Description

The Union House, built in 1965, holds historical significance as the site where the union of the Emirates was signed in 1971. Located on Jumeirah Road, it was used by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum for meetings and government activities. Now part of Etihad Museum, the circular building has been restored to its original 1970s appearance, preserving its historical value. The surrounding landscape and shoreline have been designed to replicate the setting of the momentous occasion, offering visitors a tangible connection to the nation's founding.

Statement of Significance

This house represents a historical legacy of the UAE and an important milestone for future generations... To preserve it means to maintain the historic moments, to perpetuate the national memories and document the experience of an Arab unity. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, who initiated the conservation and restoration of the building.
'Dar Al Etihad', also known as 'The Union House', holds great national significance as the official birthplace of the United Arab Emirates. It became a symbol of unity when the rulers of the Emirates gathered at the circular table inside to sign the declaration on December 2, 1971. The house witnessed the establishment of the Union and the signing of the 'Treaty of Friendship' between the UAE and the UK.
