In the early 1990s, a significant archaeological discovery was made on Sir Bani Yas Island, where a church, a monastery, and a group of courtyard houses were found on the eastern side of the island. The identification of the church was made possible by the presence of gypsum crosses and an architectural style similar to that of other ancient churches in the Arabian Gulf region. These structures date back to the seventh and eighth centuries CE and are considered among the oldest known Christian sites in the United Arab Emirates, alongside a historic Christian monastery discovered on Al Sinniyah Island in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain.
